Surface to Air Missiles

Bloodhound Mk.1…

Bristol Bloodhound Mk.1

The Bloodhound served as a key element of UK air defences from the 1950s until the 1990s.  The version depicted here, the Bloodhound Mk.1, was introduced in 1958 to defend the RAF’s V-Bomber bases against Soviet attack.   Accompanied by the Army’s shorter range Thunderbird missile, which shared many design features, the ramjet powered Mach 2 Bloodhound was designed to intercept large Soviet bomber formations over the North Sea at  a range of about 32 miles, guided by a Ferranti radar system.   An improved Bloodhound Mk.2, flying at Mach 2.7 and with almost three times the range and a much larger warhead, began to replace the first missiles in 1964.  Bloodhounds served with the RAF, RAAF, Myanmar, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland. This is an Airfix 1/76 injection moulded kit.   Return to British Cold War page Return to Dark Side AFVs index page Return to Gengriz Modelling Index Page
